“It’s so cool! The date of the interview is noted in the beginning. I think it was September 21st, 2014? I wish I had the original paper I wrote, although if I remember correctly it was no where near as exciting as the interview itself. I love that the audio captures the background music. Was it Nina Simone? I can’t remember. I always loved going to see your father because the Jazz and Blues was going strong. Reliably, a joint would be rolled and shared around the table. I think Susan made soup that day. It might have been a vegetable soup with buffalo meat. I remember it was delicious and we sat around the table, the three of us. We had ice cream as you can tell form the recording.
Visiting your father no matter where it was felt like a real bohemian experience. His stories and attitude toward life embodied that term. I remember the first time I met him. I walked onto the Spunky Monkey ranch property and I felt like I had stepped into the bohemian museum. The various little buildings filled with endless visual entertainment. It was like walking into one of his collages.
He inspired me to be more creative. Stepping into his world reminded me that life is not worth living if you can’t expand your creative mind. Being a nurse has potential to create a boring person because it is often technical and straight laced. Your father’s creative, observant spirit was a reminder that the world is not filled with boring people and I don’t have to be one either.” – Colleen Matzke
